Dr. Camilla (Margaroli) Bell received her master degree in Medical Biology at the University of Lausanne (Switzerland) in 2015, and her PhD in Immunology and Molecular Pathogenesis in 2019 from the Graduate Division of Biological and Biomedical Sciences at Emory University (Atlanta, GA). During her thesis in Dr. Tirouvanziam’s group, Dr. Bell studied the mechanisms leading to neutrophil plasticity in chronic diseases, with a primary focus on lung inflammation in infants and adults affected by cystic fibrosis. She continued working on mechanisms regulating airway inflammation upon infection (including SARS-CoV-2) during her postdoctoral training in Dr. Amit Gaggar’s group at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Currently, Dr. Bell is an assistant professor in the Department of Pathology at UAB where her work focuses on the regulation of inflammatory responses in the cardiopulmonary system. Severe SARS-CoV-2 infection often leads to the development of thrombotic and cardiovascular events, as well as of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), with profound pulmonary patho-histological changes post-mortem. This seminar highlights how we leveraged spatial transcriptional analysis from patient affected by COVID-19 to inform mechanistic studies addressing the regulation of the immune response during SARS-CoV-2 infection
