Evidence for Resistance Training as a Treatment Therapy in Obesity - PMC Resistance training as a treatment therapy for obesity; I read a research paper with that title, and it brought up some awesome points explaining how building muscle reduces obesity. It placed weight training right under calorie restriction and found it equally effective as aerobic exercise in reducing body fat. The most significant advantage resistance training has is that it protects us from losing lean muscle tissue when we’re in a calorie deficit. Even better than that, in many cases, we can continue to build muscle when in this deficit, and this additional muscle increases our resting metabolic rate. Every 11 pounds of muscle we gain increases our calorie burn by about 100 calories a day. Research also finds resistance training reduces belly fat by preferentially mobilizing visceral and subcutaneous fat around our midsections. The one study I looked at had the participants training 3 days a week doing full-body workouts using 8 to 12 repetitions, bringing each set to failure.
