34070 "Manston" hauls a demonstration freight set on the Swanage Railway 12/07/2024

It’s not often a steam hauled freight set graces a preserved railway outside of galas and events, so the chance to witness the phenomenon is always bound to raise some interest. This would be the case at the Swanage Railway, with a demonstration freight set appearing for two return trips through the Isle of Purbeck between Swanage and Norden. The demonstration freight set would be hauled by Southern Locomotives Ltd stalwart 34070 “Manston”. The purpose of the working would be for guard training on the freight set, therefore ensuring enough volunteers remain actively signed off in order for the freight set to make public appearances at future events. The use of 34070 “Manston” came about by fortuitous circumstance. The freight set had been booked for one of the resident Class 33s to work. However, the Bulleid pacific had been undergoing a steam test the same morning, and it was seen as economical to use 34070 as the coal was already burning, rather than have to prepare another locomotive. “Manston” is currently presented in a wonderfully weathered condition, providing a welcome and authentic reminder of 34070's working life; 34070 spent its final years allocated to 72A Exmouth Junction, appearing in a similarly rundown state. The freight runs would be laced between the passenger services operating on the SR’s Blue timetable, hauled by 34028 “Eddystone”. This would see two SLL pacifics operating together in the Isle of Purbeck for the day; even after a month has passed since “Strictly Bulleid II”.
