He then addressed the challenges of processing geospatial data and introduced his approach using a 23ai database to create SDO geometry data types and spatial indexes, emphasising the role of vector tiles and H3 spatial indices in enhancing performance. The presentation included a demonstration of creating a map layer for EV chargers using a function in the VS code editor. Jim displayed how the map visualises various energy sources, such as wind turbines and photovoltaic cells, and noted the quick loading times achieved with MapGL technology. He also introduced H3, a geographic indexing system developed by Uber, which employs hexagons and pentagons for precise location tracking and data aggregation. Jim elaborated on the benefits of caching vector tiles for improved performance in applications like retail and postal services. He explained how H3 indexing facilitates the display of aggregate data across multiple mapping layers and zoom levels, making it easier to work with vector tiles. He emphasised the importance of latitude and longitude as key data sources for creating vector tiles and discussed the application’s design for visualising static data. The session concluded with a call for registration for an upcoming conference and appreciation for Jim's insights.
