Out of all the miraculous things I’ve seen in my lifetime—revivals, civil wars halted, tens of thousands coming to Christ—one stands alone as the greatest miracle of all: I love people. Years ago, when a well-known radio host asked me what the greatest miracle was in my life, I told her that. And she broke down in tears—because it wasn’t the answer she expected. But it was the truth. There was a time I couldn’t feel anything. As a police officer, I could draw chalk lines around broken bodies and go eat lunch. My heart was cold. But then came Jesus. Slowly, not all at once, He changed me. And what started as a self-focused, stone-cold soul began to come alive. Christ in me—the hope of glory—began forming a heart that could feel, care, and love. And that’s the essence of the greatest commandment: Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength—and love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang everything. I’ve seen many ministers reach the end of their lives burned out, bitter, and passionless—not because they didn’t love God, but because they never truly learned to love people. But I’ve also seen others finish strong—tender, kind, compassionate—still loving people deeply in their final days. And that’s the road I’ve chosen. Just this week, I held a 90-year-old man in my arms at a small tent crusade as he wept—a man who hadn’t responded in church in years. And that moment mattered to me just as much as the thousands I’ve seen respond in stadiums. Because real ministry is never about the crowds. It’s always about the one. Love God. Love people. That’s the miracle that matters most.
