A leg length discrepancy can change posture by forcing the body to compensate for uneven support from the ground. When one leg is shorter, the pelvis often tilts and the spine adapts to stay upright. Over time, this compensation can make shoulders, hips, and head position look uneven even when posture habits are good. This applies to adults and children who notice asymmetry that does not improve with stretching, strengthening, or posture exercises. Leg length differences are commonly misunderstood because the visible problem appears in the shoulders or spine, not at the legs. A structural leg length difference is different from muscle tightness or slouching, which usually responds to exercise and cueing. A leg length discrepancy can be anatomical, meaning one bone is truly shorter, or functional, meaning joint position or muscle imbalance creates the appearance of a short leg. In both cases, the body adapts by rotating the pelvis and curving the spine to keep the eyes level. This is why shoe wear, pant length, and uneven hips often show up before pain. Exercises alone usually do not correct the imbalance if the underlying cause is structural. Assessment focuses on identifying whether the difference is real and whether it is correctable with proper intervention. In this video, you will learn: How to spot simple visual signs that suggest a possible leg length discrepancy.. Why posture exercises and stretching often fail when a short leg is involved. How to know whether a leg length difference may be contributing to posture problems and needs further assessment. Dr. Whitney Wihlidal, chiropractor, Orillia, Ontario. Leave a comment.
