This session was presented as part of the Fab Educators Summit 2026, a global, volunteer-run event bringing together educators using digital fabrication, makerspaces, and emerging technologies in K–12 classrooms around the world. Learn more about the Fab Educators Summit at www.eduFAB.org Details about this session at Fab Educators Summit 2026: Presented by: Cathy Chen, Fab Lab El Paso, United States Session Title: Smart Makers: Connecting Makerspace Classroom to Manufacturing Skills How can we turn printing Yoda heads into career-ready skills for advanced manufacturing and computing? In this 20-minute focus talk, we’ll explore how makerspace projects can intentionally build the same habits and competencies used in modern factories: digital fabrication, quality control, iteration, teamwork, and problem-solving with data. We’ll look at concrete examples that connect common tools (3D printers, laser cutters, microcontrollers, CAD) to in-demand roles in smart manufacturing and Industry 4.0. Educators will leave with a new thought framework and language to talk about “future of work” with students that map makerspace skills to manufacturing skills. Learn about goal-setting and reflexivity tools that help students see themselves as future technicians, engineers, and problem-solvers. Whether you’re new to makerspaces or scaling an established program, this session will help you rethink your activities as a powerful on-ramp from classroom creativity to career pathways.
