Ep.218: Discussing Neurodiversity, Neuro-inclusion, Leadership and the Future of Work, with Grant Harris | Leadership Podcasts Leadership isn't a straight line; so why do we keep trying to lead that way? Have you ever felt stuck trying to navigate a non-linear path to success? In reality, effective leadership is complex, messy, and full of pivots, just like human brains. Which is why this week I'm talking with Grant Harris, a neurodiversity advocate, about the complexities of leadership and the importance of embracing neurodiversity in the workplace. We discuss neuroinclusion and the future of work, and the nature of leadership, how it goes beyond strategy and vision, incorporating emotional and cultural intelligence. Grant advocates for a shift in perspective, he challenges common misconceptions about neurodiversity, asserting that it is not a "problem to be fixed" but a valuable aspect of diverse thinking that can enhance organizational performance. He urges leaders to ask questions and engage with their teams to foster more inclusive environments. Leaders often assume there's a single best way to move forward, but that mindset can cause inefficiencies and burnout. Instead, embracing a flexible, curious, and questioning approach helps us meet others where they are. It’s not just about strategy and vision (I'm still thinking about this but, I'm not sure it's even about these at all...) but it is about understanding the human side of leadership: culture, EQ, communication, empathy. Emotional and cultural intelligence are crucial in leadership. Neurodiversity should be embraced in the workplace. Isolation and loneliness affect leaders at all levels. Biases and stigmas against neurodiversity persist. Neurodiversity is not a new concept; it has existed for a long time. Understanding productivity is not just about output, but sustainability. Leaders must create environments for individual success. True leadership involves admitting mistakes and learning from them. Asking questions is more effective than making statements. -- Sound Bites: "Leadership isn't linear." "Isolation and loneliness is real." "Ask more questions and listen more." "Leaders look like you and look like me." "Fix your process, not your people." "Neurodiversity is not new." "Everyone thinks a little bit differently." "Neurodiversity is the now of work."
