High angle wide shot of scene STORYLINE: Violence broke out in the Portuguese Algarve region again on Friday night as crowds of drunken, largely English, people threw bottles and hurled insults at riot police. According to local police, at least six people were arrested during the fracas, the latest in a series of incidents during the Euro 2004 football tournament. The trouble flared outside the now notorious La Bamba bar, the scene of violence between English crowds and police on Monday and Tuesday night. British officials, the Portuguese government and representatives of UEFA, European soccer's governing body, have insisted the disorders have had little to do with soccer. British police officers liaising with Portuguese authorities blamed drunken thugs for the disturbances. But Lieutenant General Leonel Carvalho, head of the Portuguese security operation for Euro 2004, insisted that the problems were related to the tournament even though those detained so far had no previous record of hooliganism. British police stopped almost 2,700 known or convicted soccer hooligans from travelling to the European Championship in Portugal in an effort to prevent the large-scale rioting that tainted Euro 2000 in Belgium and the Netherlands and the 1998 World Cup in France. UEFA, European soccer's governing body, has previously threatened to throw England out of the tournament if its fans misbehave again.
