While effective at categorizing data, this method is limited by its sequential nature, Critics argue that current computation can’t create the new connections or symbolic representations needed for novel understandings (Penrose, 1989, 1994). The difference between human and AI processing is sometimes described like the ability to follow a list of instructions versus generating one. While modern AI can produce programs and articles, these are based on human-discovered relationships, not true understanding.
