In the wake of the 2021 winter storm, Abilene city leaders vowed to improve infrastructure and emergency preparedness. As temperatures dropped again, officials assessed whether those promises were upheld. "2021 was certainly a time where we learned a lot of lessons with the infrastructure failures and kind of the cascading effects of that incident," said the city's Emergency Management Coordinator, Vincent Cantu. "We were able to take those lessons and improve our processes and implement them into our plans this year." Officials reported that during the recent cold snap, there were no surprises, and communication with sectors such as Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, water, infrastructure, energy, Atmos, AEP, and transportation was effective. The city has been implementing plans made after the 2021 storm, focusing on major infrastructure projects that require extensive planning. Officials have also confirmed that the city is working continuously to implement more long-term solutions, including the purchase of generators in the future. "The city has taken and implemented lessons learned just as many jurisdictions across the state have," Cantu noted. "But moving forward there are always ways we can improve."
