Today we are delighted to present a short video which is designed to help you or family / carers, to discuss skin care and pressure ulcer prevention with a person who has a learning disability. In addition to one-one learning, this resource could be used to aid a small group discussion on healthy skin for people with learning disabilities. The video features “Bill” who is played by Mr John Moffat. In the first part of the video, Bill spends long periods of time lying or sitting in one position. He is not looking after his skin and his diet is very poor. In the second part of the video "Bill" demonstrates the actions needed to keep skin healthy and pressure ulcer free. The visual representation of what ‘good’ and ‘bad’ looks like is important as 55% of how we communicate is through body language. The remainder is through tone of voice (38%) and words (7%). John’s facial expressions and actions are therefore supported by a very simple narrative, which is jargon free, and repetitive in nature. Please stop the video at any point so that the person with learning disabilities can take time to process what they are seeing/hearing and, ask simple open question to check understanding. Remember, to be a good communication partner you need to follow the lead of the person you are communicating with, and go at their pace. The #4Nations Campaign group would like to thank everyone from the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Queen's University Belfast who were involved in creating this video. In particular, we would like to thank John for his superb acting skills, and Aaron Smyth (Learning Disability Nurse) for developing the concept and providing the voice over. John would like to dedicate this video to his father Davy who sadly passed away in October 2024
