16.2 miles for the day Total ascent: 2735 feet Total descent: 3023 feet Total grade 6.7% 97.4 miles of AT completed 107.6 miles hiked Total ascent of AT completed: 23,118 feet Easier than yesterday. Last one out of the shelter again but caught up with Travis and then Woody and Josh. Continued on under cloudy skies but little wind and low 50s, great hiking weather. The main climb today was up Standing Indian Mountain, 5478 feet, the highest point so far. The climb was not that bad, five miles overall, and the last pitch was a fairly smooth wagon road that switchbacks to just under the summit. I took the 0.1 mile spur trail to the summit where I spent almost an hour taking in the view, catching up on Strava, emailing Durston Gear about my pack (it's too large, I need a medium, so I am checking to see if he can give me some sort of deal on that), and just enjoying life. Woody and Josh got there and we just hung out chatting. Good guys. Rest of the day was sort of a mad dash to Betty Creek. I still had 10 miles and it was 1 pm. Thankfully the trail was net downhill and not very rough, but I was kinda in a zombie-like state the last few miles. I did manage to reserve a bunk at the Grove Hostel for tomorrow (Friday) night. I may take a zero Saturday, Franklin is supposed to be a great little town, the first designated Appalachian Trail town. I'm camped with two others here at Betty Creek, but we are well dispersed. No shelter tonight or privy, but there is a bear box. The little things. A really good day.
