Appalachian Trail NOBO, Day 12, March 8, 2026: Winding Stair Gap to Siler Bald Shelter

4.2 miles for the day Total ascent: 1563 feet Total descent: 247 feet Total grade 8.1% 113.8 miles of AT completed 124 miles hiked Total ascent of AT completed: 27,005 feet Good night sleep at the Grove Hostel. Up early but couldn't get on trail because the only outfitter open today opened at noon. So went to Walmart and Ingles with some friends. Appetite is kicking in. AKA hiker hunger. So far today: two packets oatmeal, two apples, two bananas, a hot dog, and a foot long Italian sub. Finally on trail at 1245 and short hike to Siler Bald Shelter. Could go further with the extra daylight but it was raining and no need to push and get soaked. So just hanging out chatting with a fellow hiker. Not sure I'll need dinner after all that but we'll see. Got my bear bag prepped to hang. Rained stopped now at 5 pm. Foggy and gloomy. But spirits still up. Looking forward to the Smokies, be there in 4-5 days!
