Join me, Perry Spiller, as I take a clear-eyed look at one of the most loathed tools in modern health and weight loss: the Body Mass Index (BMI). If you've ever wondered why BMI gets so much hate—or if you're sceptical about using it yourself—this video is for you. We'll explore the surprising origins of BMI, invented in the 1840s by Belgian polymath Adolphe Quetelet, and how a population-level statistical tool became a personal health measure. You'll discover how BMI came to be used by doctors and health professionals, not because it’s perfect, but because it’s simple, fast, and—crucially—correlates well enough with percentage body fat to be useful… most of the time. But let’s be honest: BMI isn’t perfect. In fact, it can be hilariously inaccurate, particularly for athletes, bodybuilders, children, and people with atypical body composition. It’s easy to see why people resent it—it’s often the bearer of vague or upsetting news. And yet, despite all that, I still use BMI in my method—because I’m not offering the complicated, gold-standard, 50-grand-scanner way to lose weight. I’m offering you the EASY way. This video is part of the series that began with: 👉 “The EASY Way to Lose Weight and Stay Thin” – where we laid down the mindset shift: “I don’t snack.” 👉 In later videos, we looked at how busy people can lose weight, and how to choose your target BMI to build a sustainable plan. In this one, we dive into: What BMI really measures (and what it doesn’t) Why it does work across both sexes despite different fat requirements of men and women The difference between emotional and rational criticisms of BMI Why BMI remains the best available tool for estimating calorie needs And why waist-to-height ratio, while promising, isn’t yet practical for everyday use If you're serious about losing weight easily and in a sustainable way—without obsessing over every gram—BMI is still a handy tool in your kit.
