Many of these trucks are full of school supplies and medicines that they bring to these villages." 3. Wide of participants and cars before race 4. This year the rally will go from Budapest to Bissau, the capital of Guinea-Bissau in west Africa, instead of Bamako in Mali, as organisers want to see the race travelling deeper into Africa. Competitors will drive down through Europe to Genoa in southern Italy. From there they will take a ferry across the Mediterranean to Morocco and then begin the African stage, travelling through Mauritania, Mali and Senegal to reach their destination. Drivers who reach the finish will have covered 8,100 kilometres (5,033 miles). One of the goals of the Budapest-Bamako rally is to give people from all walks of life and backgrounds the opportunity to take part. "Basically the message here is that you don't need a lot of money, you don't need a fancy car to experience adventure, to feel the strength, the power of the Sahara and the warmth of West Africa," said rally founder, Andrew Szabo. The race was created eight years ago when Guinea's only commercial jet crashed, forcing Hungarian born internet entrepreneur Szabo to take a 1,600 kilometre (994 miles) car journey in western Africa to reach his business destination. He says the trip changed his life, and he established the Budapest-Bamako race. There are various race categories. The touring category is more about adventure - connecting with other people and discovering Africa.
