BobBlast #578 Paint the Illusion of 3D in an Abstract, Part Two Welcome Back to Another BobBlast! The last BobBlast was about painting the illusion of 3D in a 2D painting—the demo was a floral vase, establishing a specific light source direction and using color to show the focal point. This BobBlast, part two, we are also painting the illusion of 3D on a 2D surface—this time we are working on an abstract painting. This is what works for me now with abstract painting. I paint with the same approach as my traditional expressive techniques seen in the previous BobBlast. After toning the entire watercolor paper, I start with the focal point…emphasizing and communicating the reason I’m doing this painting. But first—before I even start, I title the painting and write the name on the back of the watercolor paper. Just that simple act of writing the title keeps me focused on the direction I want to take on this piece. So, establishing the focal point, I go for contrast around the focal point. That means, the focal point catches the eye first. It is in focus, using hard, contrasting edges. All else begins to gently fade away in soft focus. The softened edges are secondary, supporting “the star” (the final point). Let’s talk about color. Another way to express 3D depth in your abstract painting is through color: •Warm Colors—red, yellow, orange generally appear to come forward •Cool Colors—blue and green generally recede Matisse once wrote, “…to make red more noticeable, you paint it smaller.” So that’s one way to paint the 3D illusion, using contrast, focal point and color pallette of warm and cool. No 3D glasses required… If you enjoyed this BobBlast, sign up for this online zoom workshop! •August 5, 2025 Loose Figures in an Abstract Painting https://robertburridge.com/zoomin-wit...
