The Austin Village in-between Longbridge and Northfield in Birmingham was an estate of housing built in 1917 to house female munition workers and their children. Lesser well known than than counterparts like Bournville Village in Birmingham or Port Sunlight in The Wirral it is a beautiful example of housing provided for workers. Only ever meant to last 17 years they still stand. Most interestingly these homes were imported as a flat pack, made from cedarwood and imported from The USA. I remember the first time I drove through The Austin Village, heavy snow had come down and the college I was lecturing at was closed, I needed to drive home and someone recommended a "back route" for me - and I drove past these fascinating wooden bungalows. I didn't think much other than "wow they were nice" and not until recently have I taken the time to look them up, inspired by my lovely You Tube community. What I found totally exceeded my expectations. As always I hope you enjoy the video, this is only a short one, a thank you - a kind of bonus video for all your support. #history #cabinhouse #architecture #historicalhomes #historicarchitecture #austinvillage #birminghamuk #austin7 #workershomes #womenshistory #woodenhouse #wholivesinahouselikethis #heritage #socialhistory #socialhistoryofengland #socialhousing #historyexploration #shorthistory
