In this module we had discussed about the importance and precautions required for steam curing. Why steam curing is required for pre cast elements. How steam curing can increase the productivity of pre cast elements are discussed in this module. How to optimize the maximum temperature at which the concrete elements can be maintained to ensure that the required strength is achieved. It is known that steam curing will help to gain almost 70 to 80% of the 28 days compressive strength within 16 to 18 hours. But its also a fact that steam curing should follow water or any other suitable mode for curing for a minimum period of seven days to achieve the required compressive strength at 28 days or else a reduction of approximately 40% strength can be observed due to steam curing. Bottom line is steam curing must follow additional curing of seven days for achieving the required strength.
