The hamstrings are a common area of tension for many people. Tight hamstrings could come from sitting for prolonged periods of time, or activities that contract them such as running and cycling. This could potentially cause/aggravate lower back pain, sciatica, posture issues and knee pain. Because the hamstrings are connected to the hips, glutes and calves, it helps to release all these areas too. Remember that we need to experience a certain level of discomfort in order to stress the muscle and progress but if we apply too much force or strain on the body, it will simply respond by tensing up further to protect itself. Make sure to listen to your body, stay connected to the breath and find some softness in the pose. If the body believes it is relaxed and 'safe,' it will be easier for it to release the muscle. Enjoy!
