#5 from 'De mis montañas' (From my mountains): Series 1 -------------------------------------- Phillip Sear plays a piece by the Peruvian composer Manuel Lorenzo Aguirre de la Fuente (1863–1951). --------------------------------------- Born in Arequipa, Peru, Aguirre did not pursue music as his main profession, but had a lifelong involvement. He actually worked in public service management, eventually becoming the assistant manager at the Sociedad Eléctrica de Arequipa (SEAL) utility company, from which he retired in 1948. Aguirre served as the Honorary Consul of Panama and was the senior member of the local consular corps. Aguirre's musical activities were largely limited to private performances with friends and occasional public concerts, rather than roles in the church, cinema, or teaching. In 1940, he was selected to be a judge for a contest to choose the anthem for the 400th anniversary of the Spanish founding of Arequipa, along with two other notable musicians. His music combines late 19th century musical romanticism with the emerging modernist tendencies of the 20th century, but also borrows from local folk music. It was dedicated to Doris Yriberry Gibson (ca.1900–46), who was the first carnival queen in the inaugural Arequipa carnival in 1923.
