After hearing God pronounce His judgments of pain, toil, and death on our first parents, we had a glimmer of hope last week. We saw Adam naming his wife Eve, the mother of all living, and God clothing them with the skins of an animal—both significant acts in His redemptive plan. But before Adam and Eve can breathe a sigh of relief, they find themselves being kicked out of the Garden of Eden. This Sunday, as we close the creation-fall account in Genesis 1-3, we will see not only God banish our first parents from the garden, but also His reasoning behind His decision. And as we do, two truths will emerge: (1) man’s desire to live forever, even in his sinful state, and (2) God’s merciful provision, keeping Adam and Eve from further harm and providing another way back to the tree of life. I pray you will find our closing scene in Genesis 3 both edifying and encouraging. Soli Deo Gloria! Big Idea: Living forever in sin is death, so God provides a way to life in Christ. 1. Man’s dangerous pursuit 2. God’s merciful provision ============================ Preparation Questions: Genesis 3:22-24 1. How do men strive to avoid death? Why, even as we grow older, does the desire to live remain so powerful? 2. In what ways do you try to experience true life apart from Christ? How can you be sure these attempts will ultimately fail? 3. In what ways could God’s expulsion of Adam and Eve from the Garden be understood as an act of love? 4. Why did God place cherubim to guard the garden? Considering the tabernacle, how might the Israelites have viewed the placement of the cherubim as a source of hope? 5. How can sinners regain access to the garden, to God’s presence, and to the tree of life? Do you experience that access today? ============================ Learn more about www.cccsanjose.org #eternallife #treeoflife #genesis #expositorypreaching #sermon
