Piekne is a 13.5 week juvenile female Grey-Headed Flying-Fox who managed to crash-land into a deep courtyard lightwell in an apartment block complex (where I have rescued a trapped batty previously). In the manner of most juveniles, she can't see her way out, so she just hung there waiting to die. The adults will try over and over to escape, smacking into walls and hitting their heads and bashing themselves about a bit. The juvies tend to give up and just wait for death or rescue. Fortunately Piekne was one of the passive juveniles, who just waited, so she was relatively uninjured, with just a bump on her head from her initial crash-landing in the courtyard. I had a delightful 36 hours with her in my care, as she went from a bit wonky to ready for transfer to a carer with other juveniles in care. Piekne will remain in care for a few more weeks with other late babies, then will go into the release aviary; by this time she will be more mature, better nourished, buddied with the other bats with whom she will be released, and have regained her mojo. Her name came from the Polish word for beautiful, and yes, I know I have mispronounced it in the video, but it seems to suit her like this, and yes, she is also definitely beautiful. Tolga Bat Hospital takes donations for our batties. Tolga is an awesome place in Far North Queensland, which has charity status. By sending donations to them, they get a percentage (and deserve every cent) and they can allocate money to me for batty expenses without it becoming part of my income stream (which makes tax time difficult). https://tolgabathospital.org/donate/ Mention Megabattie or Meg in the PayPal message box and the money will find its way to me. If no message box appears, please email Jenny to tell her that the money is for me. IMPORTANT: If you pay through the PayPal Giving Fund, can you please email Jenny with the AMOUNT DONATED and the name under which you have donated, OR just forward along the PP receipt. The Giving Fund doesn’t charge any fees (so the bats get more money) but PP doesn’t itemise out the amount, they just send a total every month, and we don’t know if the money is for Tolga or for Megabattie. Here’s Jenny’s email. jenny@tolgabathospital.org
