The Problem with Back Squats… There’s no way around it. When you place large amounts of weight on a human spine that is vertical in relation to the ground there will be compression forces put on the spine and vertebral discs. With light weight this isn’t too much of an issue but… We all know that back squats start with the bar, and end with more and more weight on the bar. This is because people find it harder and harder to actually feel their glutes during a back squat over time… So with the progression of adding more weight, what you get is more spinal compression especially in the lumbar spine. This isn’t so much the case when let’s say you lift up a log and have it place over one shoulder and now your leaning to that side with your spine and upper body to hold the log in place as you move the log from point a to b. The weight of the log is now being distributed placed more so on the muscles of the spine and ribcage to hold the lean you’re having to hold to keep the log in place instead of it all going to the spine. This is our main concern with back squats. There’s no way of displacing the weight to more muscles on the front and back side of the body. The compression is mainly put on the spine, instead of the muscles that support the spine… When you hold a bar bell on your shoulders that renders the thoracic unable to move and distribute the load to the muscles around it. With no movement in the thoracic this places all that pressure on your cervical or lumbar or both. Instead of focusing on Barbell squats, we focus on uni-lateral glute training at FP. To work one glute then the other, is synchronous with how we walk, run and move side to side through space. Remember squatting comes as a byproduct to the functions of standing, walking, running and throwing. We help people improve their squat by first focusing on their gait cycle. And nearly all of our clients that had problems with squat exercises in the past, now squat without issue or the damage to their spine… Comment below, if you want us to break down more alternatives to use in place of the rudimentary back squat. #functionalpatterns #backsquat #functionaltraining" Online Programs: https://functionalpatterns.com/collec...
