By 1862, engineers had surveyed a railroad route across the Sierra Nevada, and Congress authorized the Central Pacific to begin building the first U.S. transcontinental railroad east from Sacramento, and the Union Pacific working westward from Omaha. Those two lines would ultimately meet at Promontory in the Great Salt Lake Desert of northern Utah, the site of today's Golden Spike National Historical Park.
