Played on MAME 0.217 Released as an enhanced version of Salamander. What led to this game happening is somewhat interesting. Let's go back in history for a little bit: So apparently americans thought Salamander as it is wouldn't do well, and they felt the need to shoehorn a random plot about being inside a creature and having to destroy it from there, or some shit like that. Also recycling the same background to convey the feeling of being inside a creature along with a shitton of new voice clips, some of them kind of infamous (KIDNEY STONES CANNOT BE DESTROYED). Originally, I had planned to upload a 2-ALL of that version as well, but some problems with the MAME input file happened and I didn't feel like redoing it. It seems Konami of japan liked this american version so much they decided to flesh it out even more. Just having extends and many bugfixes make this absolutely worth checking out. Most notably, the infamous boss in Stage 4 won't infinitely throw cores and randomly stop attacking you in higher loops. Also your shield is actually worth a damn and you can equip up to four of them. The most notorious change in this game is ditching the fixed powerup drops from Salamander in favor of the powerup system from the first Gradius game where you grab power capsules from enemies and select what you want from the bar at the bottom of the screen. There are even more power capsules in some stages to help you take advantage of that, Stage 3 in particular is a lot more forgiving given that if you die you can still get power capsules and recover your weapons. Lord British has a different (arguably better) powerup order in comparison to Vic Viper, but I already played Salamander with Lord British so I wanted to pick Vic Viper on this one. Overall I think this is a better game seeing as extends are relatively frequent and most of the stupid design from Salamander (Stage 4 boss, shield being useless) was fixed. A title worth checking out in the Gradius series.
