Cupid! A song written by the great Sam Cooke in 1961. Sam was an American soul singer and songwriter, considered to be one of the most influential soul singers of all time. He's commonly referred to as the "King of Soul" for his distinctive vocals, pioneering contributions to the genre, and significance in popular music. He influenced the likes of Otis Redding, Tina Turner...and his contributions to soul music contributed to the rise of Aretha Franklin, Bobby Womack, Al Green, Stevie Wonder...and so many more. Sadly, his life came to an end at only 33 years of age, on December 11th, 1964. It was a tragic end, with Sam being shot and killed. The circumstances around his death are suspicious, with many of Cooke's friends stating that there were cover ups, and that the FBI should have lead a full investigation, instead of close-casing it so rapidly. Afer watching a documentary of his life, I too am suspicious. But I'll let you draw your own conclusions. Those of us who love Sam as an artist will agree that he had one of the most beautiful, soulful, velvety tenor voices, and that he's one of the greatest singers of all time. To my ear it's remarkable how he could cross genres, and infuse any style of song with his soulful phrasing and feel. He was remarkable, and it's such a shame that he only had 33 years on this earth. What an incredible body of work he left behind! I hope you'll enjoy my ukulele take on this beautiful 60s pop classic! Please feel free to like/subscribe.
