A common question I hear from clients often is, “What are some things I can do to get out of anxiety or depression?” One important shift to make in the road to mental health is to realize that you are not the problem, the problem is the problem. Many of us have a tendency to identify and fuse with whatever the issue is that we want to change. So we can think, “I’m just an anxious person, it’s who I am,” instead of, “I’m a person who is struggling with anxiety." When we make ourselves the problem by fusing with that thing, then we invite shame into our self-concept and we often feel powerless, thinking, “it’s just my personality, I’m just like this.” Instead, recognize that the anxiety, depression, or fill in the blank does not define you. It’s an external problem you are dealing with and learning to overcome, but it’s not part of who you are. This shift can start to help you expect change and transformation, versus feeling stuck.
