You’ve done the training. Hit the numbers. Tapered properly. Then you line up and your heart rate is already 130 before you’ve turned a pedal. The race starts and you’re nowhere near the performance you’re capable of. Afterwards, the conclusion is usually the same: wasn’t fit enough, need to train harder. But that’s often wrong. The fitness was there. The problem was anxiety. This video explains what’s actually happening when pre-race nerves hit, why it exists, when it helps, when it hurts, and what you can do about it. I cover cognitive vs somatic anxiety, the feedback loop that makes it spiral, how anxiety burns through glycogen before you’ve even started, why interpretation matters more than intensity, and six evidence-based techniques that actually work: self-talk, breathing, routines, reframing, mindfulness, and pressure exposure. Plus my own caffeine-fuelled disaster as a warning. If you’ve ever had a race where you know the fitness was there but the performance wasn’t, this one’s for you. I’m a British Cycling Level 3 coach working with riders from beginners to national champions.
