We encounter Jonah, the prophet who ran from God's call to extend mercy to Israel's enemies in Nineveh, and Peter, who centuries later stood on a rooftop in that same city and received a vision that would change the course of Christianity forever. The parallel between these two men reveals a timeless truth: God's mercy has always been intended for all people, not just a select few. Jonah's story in the Old Testament previewed what Peter's experience in Acts 10 would launch globally—the inclusion of Gentiles in God's redemptive plan. The repetition of God's command to Peter three times wasn't mere persuasion; it was the establishment of a new covenant reality. The question confronting us today is deeply personal: Where is our Joppa? What uncomfortable assignment are we avoiding? The church doesn't grow by protecting comfort; it advances when we say yes to God's call, even when it challenges our prejudices and pushes us beyond familiar boundaries.
