Sorry that this video is a bit late--I almost forgot I hadn't uploaded this yet. It was kind of a surprise overall though, as eight months had passed since the last Maximus Cup in Tetris 99, such that I thought they were done. I have to wonder if this is a one-off thing or if they'll do more in the future, namely if HAL Laboratories had someone request Arika to do another Maximus Cup, or if the Arika staff had been busy for the latter half of 2022 and couldn't get back to these until now. But I'm glad there's one more Maximus Cup to end 2022. (This is not including the catch-up Maximus Cup 30, which was a catch-up event, so minimal programming was needed for that one.) This time, as I haven't played Kirby Dream Buffet, nor did I ever look into it that much, I don't actually know what the sound effects, icons, and such correspond to. However, like the previous Kirby themes, the Minos take the form of the star blocks that's been a standard of Kirby games since near the start. Knocked out players look like a silverware set, with silver ones being normal knocked out players and gold ones being players you knocked out personally (unless you're so insanely good that the people you knock out take up the majority of players, in which case gold is the normal one and silver is the one for players you've failed to knock out). The music seems to be a medley of various songs, some of which are new and some are remixes of existing themes. Like with the Maximus Cups for Kirby and the Forgotten Land and Kirby Fighters 2, the top 10 theme is that of King Dedede--it seems like after its omission in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, every Kirby game has striven to include it somewhere, even if King Dedede himself has a limited role or no role at all. Nothing wrong with that. It's a classic tune of the Kirby series, cemented by its use in the Dream Land stage in the original Super Smash Bros. I also heard a lot of "boing!" sound effects whenever clearing a single, double, or triple; I'm guessing this is due tot he gameplay involving Ball Kirbies bumping into each other. It is also perhaps the pinkest theme in the entirety of Tetris 99. I'm glad we're over that era of girly stuff and cutesy stuff being verboten in American games you know, the era of "real men's games" like Final Fantasy VII, the Duke Nukem series, Halo, and anything involving Lara Croft--not that they're bad, but that they represent the hypermasculinity prevalent in media at the time as a means of declaring to the world that video games are not just for little kids). We still have various forms of toxic masculinity lingering around in video game cultures, but that's a topic for another day. One little touch I find neat is that the "GO!" sound effect is that of a classic oven timer finishing up. I do hope there will be more though. I know people are requesting Maximus Cups themed on Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Bayonetta 3, Splatoon 3, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, and such. Match #1 Skin: Special Theme 23 (Kirby Dream Buffet) Mode: Normal Since it's been so long since the last Maximus Cup, there are probably a lot of the more casual players who missed this one due to not having expected one more at the tail end of this year. As a result, I saw a higher concentration of the hardcore, very aggressive players than normal for a Maximus Cup. Here, I got heckled from right hear the start, and it wouldn't let up until they found someone else to pick on...and then got right back to me. Every several seconds, I'd see a new 7- to 11-line attack, and I spent all of my effort on survival. (in the end though, I placed ahead of them!) Match #2 Skin: Special Theme 23 (Kirby Dream Buffet) Mode: Normal This is a match where I took 1st place, and so we get to hear the victory jingle! And man, is it a LONG one. In case you never got 1st place (or you never got a chance to play this event), and you want to hear it, I stuck around for its entirety. It takes a good 4 minutes to loop and goes from an orchestral sounding piece with various themes, then goes into chiptune with a mix of new and pre-existing Kirby themes, then back for a full loop. Match #3 Skin: Special Theme 23 (Kirby Dream Buffet) Mode: Invictus And, of course, I wrap things up with a match in Invictus, to show what that looks like, both with the increased gravity compared to the normal modes, as well as the background turning the burning red when only 10 players remain. Since there are relatively few people playing in Invictus, there are a lot of computer players to fill in the gaps and provide fodder, but that means you need to quickly KO some computer players to gain badges to have an advantage over the human players who will remain later. (And while it's pretty obvious, this is also confirmation that the background on the playfield of Kirby with the strawberries is not part of the background overall.
