A little while back, Elmo broke the internet by asking a simple question: “How is everybody doing?” Millions of replies poured in – many people said they weren’t okay. Exhausted. Anxious. Struggling. And in true Elmo style, he replied with care, warmth and a promise to keep checking in. The response was also a leadership lesson, as I explain in this week's MG Workplace Series. In workplaces, people are constantly managing their emotions – staying professional with demanding clients, keeping calm with stressed colleagues, holding it together in high-pressure environments. That’s healthy – until it turns into constant suppression. When what you feel and what you show are always out of sync, it creates what researchers call emotional dissonance. Over time, that internal tension is linked to burnout, anxiety, absenteeism and lower empathy. In other words, people have less energy to devote to caring. Leaders can’t fix everything, but they can: 🔺 Create space for honest check-ins, not just status updates. 🔺 Build emotional intelligence so they notice when something’s shifted. 🔺 Protect recovery time so people aren’t 'on' all the time. We can’t leave the emotional work to a red furry monster. Checking in is leadership work.
