You know boundaries matter. Yet somehow the late-night email still gets answered, the extra task still gets squeezed in, and “I’m at capacity” quietly turns into “Sure, I can do that.” We often tell ourselves this is what commitment looks like. The research tells a different story. Working longer and longer hours does not equal better performance. Once you push past a certain point, output drops, errors go up, and your well-being takes a hit. That's not sustainable, and it's not a smart strategy for high performance. Over the years, the people I have seen who are genuinely good at setting boundaries do a few things differently. They: 💠 Recognise that boundaries are about trust and respect, not a lack of commitment. 💠 Get intentional about what earns a "yes" (and what doesn't). 💠 Stay clear on their priorities so “no” protects something that matters. 💠 Communicate their limits and stick to them consistently. 💠 Build simple switch-off routines, so work does not quietly colonise their whole life. 🧠 In this week’s MG Workplace Series, I unpack why boundaries are so hard, the evidence on long hours, and nine practical ways to make your boundaries real and sustainable. Boundaries are not selfish. They are how you protect your energy, your judgement and your ability to do meaningful work over the long term.
