Advanced Qigong for Poor Circulation: how to improve circuation with TCM. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), poor circulation is caused by Qi, Blood, and Yang imbalances, leading to cold limbs, numbness, pain, or fatigue. Blood and Qi must flow smoothly to nourish tissues and maintain warmth. When circulation is impaired, it can result in stagnation, deficiency, or blockages. In Traditional Chinese Medicine there are 5 main causes of poor circulation. 1. Qi Deficiency 2. Blood Stagnation (Blood Stasis) 3. Blood Deficiency (Blood Depletion) 4. Cold in the Meridians 5. Liver Qi Stagnation 1. Qi Deficiency (气虚, Qì Xū) – Weak Vital Energy Cause: • Qi moves Blood in TCM. When Qi is weak, it cannot push Blood efficiently, leading to sluggish circulation. Common Causes: • Poor diet and malnutrition. • Chronic fatigue and overwork. • Digestive weakness (Spleen Qi Deficiency). • Aging or post-illness weakness. Symptoms of Qi Deficiency Circulation Issues: 🩸 Cold hands and feet (especially when tired). 🩸 Fatigue, lack of energy. 🩸 Pale complexion, weak voice. 🩸 Poor digestion (bloating, loose stools). 2. Blood Stagnation (血瘀, Xuè Yū) – Blocked Circulation Cause: • Blood becomes stagnant and cannot flow properly, leading to pain, clotting, or numbness. • Common Causes: • Cold exposure (constricts vessels). • Lack of movement/sitting too long. • Old injuries, trauma, or surgery scars. • Emotional stress causing Liver Qi Stagnation. Symptoms of Blood Stagnation Circulation Issues: 🩸 Cold extremities with tingling/numbness. 🩸 Sharp, fixed pain (worse at night). 🩸 Dark/purple lips, nails, or varicose veins. 🩸 Menstrual pain with clots. 3. Blood Deficiency (血虚, Xuè Xū) – Insufficient Blood to Circulate Cause: • Not enough Blood is being produced or circulated due to weak digestion, blood loss, or chronic deficiency. • Common Causes: • Poor diet (lack of iron, protein, and blood-building foods). • Heavy menstruation, postpartum depletion. • Chronic illness or blood loss. Symptoms of Blood Deficiency Circulation Issues: 🩸 Cold, pale hands and feet. 🩸 Dizziness, lightheadedness, blurred vision. 🩸 Dry skin, brittle nails, hair loss. 🩸 Numbness or tingling in extremities. 4. Cold in the Meridians (寒邪, Hán Xié) – Cold Constricting Blood Flow Cause: • Cold causes vasoconstriction, slowing Blood flow and causing stiffness. • Common Causes: • Living in cold environments or exposure to cold weather. • Eating too many cold/raw foods. • Yang Deficiency (weak Kidney Fire, inability to warm the body). Symptoms of Cold-Related Poor Circulation: 🩸 Cold hands and feet (even when the body is warm). 🩸 Pain or stiffness that improves with heat. 🩸 Slow healing wounds or bruising easily. 🩸 White or bluish lips, fingertips, or nails. 5. Liver Qi Stagnation (肝气郁滞, Gān Qì Yù Zhì) – Stress Blocking Circulation Cause: • Emotional stress causes Qi stagnation, which disrupts Blood flow and circulation. • Common Causes: • Emotional repression, frustration, or excessive worry. • Poor lifestyle habits like lack of movement. Symptoms of Liver Qi Stagnation Circulation Issues: 🩸 Cold hands/feet that warm up after relaxation/exercise. 🩸 Tension in shoulders, chest, or jaw. 🩸 Mood swings, sighing, digestive issues.
