It is a highly seasoned cured beef, (not only) made in Egypt that has been made in my family for decades. Think of it as more spiced (and tastier) version of pastrami. My mom would hang it it outside when the weather was dry, but I just hang it in my kitchen. I don't mind the strong smell of it when it is drying, i actually love it.
