Uncovering Sitka, Alaska's Best-Kept Secrets on a Cruise Port Day

Vlog 61 Location: Sitka, Alaska tags: #sitka #alaska #alaskacruise #norwegiancruise #norwegianspirit #ncl We made it to our first stop in Alaska, the city of Sitka. This city is a tender port, which means you hop onto a lifeboat and get brought into the city. Tender priority goes to people on cruise excursions and everyone else can pick up tickets the day before. We decided to forego a cruise excursion and do our own thing. Sitka is known for its Russian history, Tlingit culture and wildlife. We decide to walk along the seawall to the Sitka National Historical Park where they have a totem trail, a mile loop trail which included 18 totem poles from historic tribes in the region, including the Tlingit. This walk in within the Tongass National Forest, which is the largest temperate forest in the world. Just watch our for those bears, especially when it’s salmon season. We cut our walk short in order to check out a local craft brewery: Harbor Mountain Brewing. Co. They have some great and creative beers made with local flavors, and don’t forget to grab one of their pizzas, which also utilize local ingredients such as reindeer sausage. While here it started to rain, so we hopped onto the city bus for $2 each and headed back to the tender port. Back on board, we relaxed and decided to check out the buffet for a snack and enjoy the views. Then it was trivia time! First up, 80’s movie emoji trivia at Spinnaker Lounge followed by general trivia at Henry’s Pub. We didn’t do so well with the 80’s movie trivia but did well wit the general trivia. Then it was time for dinner, going to a specialty restaurant: Cagney’s steakhouse. We got 3 free speciality dining meals with our cruise fare. For Cagney’s we got 1 starter, 1 entree, 2 sides and 1 dessert. The food was amazing and well prepared. Tracy got the tuna tartar, shrimp skewers, creamed spinach and au gratin potatoes. Chris got the Oysters Rockefeller, porterhouse steak, au gratin potatoes, and mushrooms. We need with dessert with a blueberry crisp, 7 layer chocolate cake and cheesecake! The biggest thing that we have taken away from this is how to be savvy while traveling. At first, we took a lot of cruises because they were easy. However, we met some new friends on a cruise who told us to come visit them in Malaysia and that was our first trip that we planned all on our own. Let’s say it was a great trip but we made a few mistakes, like severely overpaying for our taxi in Bali. However, we have used everything as a learning experience. We really love the logistics of planning trips and getting the best deals and experiences. And it would be selfish to keep this knowledge to ourselves! We have lots of friends and family come to us for advice or helping planning. So why not expand our audience and help everyone out! Our motto in life is champagne taste on a beer budget, or more correctly, a 5 star hotel taste for a hostel price.
