In this video we follow two original Maine Central GP38's as the traverse the trackage through Crawford Notch. Historically both of these locomotive operated on these tracks called the Mountain Division between Portland, Maine and St. Johnsbury, Vermont. Today they regularly run from North Conway, NH to Crawford Notch, NH on the Conway Scenic Railroad and in this video during a snowstorm! This really gave us the feel of a Maine Central train running through the notch sometime between the 1960's and 80's when they used to run on these very rails. You will see scenes going over bridges and running through the White Mountains. Most notably we'll see the train coming through the "Gateway" at Crawford then rolling over the "Little Girders" bridge which is quite literally on a mountain side! We also see the train at Notchland which was a popular photo location even back in the MEC days. At the end of the video we see the train on the former Boston & Maine Conway Branch while they put away their train. Note the original train station which is a beautiful landmark in North Conway. It should be noted that the Mountain Division from North Conway to Hazens, NH was out of service for about a decade when the Conway Scenic restored it to operation. The last MEC trains ran over the notch in 1984 and CSRR rehabilitated the track starting in 1994. Soon after they started to run the popular "Notch Train", now the "Mountaineer", over the line. The trains seen in the video was running as the "Winter at Crawfords" train, the recently introduced winter version of the notch train! This is the first time in many years any trains have regularly operated through the notch during the winter and it was most appropriately powered by the original MEC geeps as noted.
