Japan’s snow country gets more snowfall than anywhere else people live. Some areas see 30 meters (98 feet) of snow every winter—burying houses, roads, and sometimes entire neighborhoods. Towns like Aomori and Myoko spend over 100 days under constant snowfall, with locals digging tunnels just to get outside. This isn’t just regular snow—it’s sea-effect snow, created when Siberian winds pull moisture from the Sea of Japan and drop it in massive amounts. Roads and train lines stay open thanks to heated streets, snow tunnels, and constant plowing. Traditional homes are built for survival, with steep roofs, high foundations, and second-story entrances for when the ground floor disappears under snow. For Myoko, consistent heavy snowfall and below freezing temperatures have kept snow levels high and continuing to grow in Myoko this winter. And today was yet another big day of snow! As for now, the big snow walls and snow piles are growing…and it looks both beautiful but also concerning. Take a walk with me through the lower part of Myoko to enjoy the winter scape. It’s very impressive to see nature in full force a day after the heavy snow. What do you notice in the video? Does anything stand out to you? How would you feel about this kind of snow and how would you manage it? Thanks for watching!
