Seattle Collaborative Orchestra - https://www.seattlecollaborativeorche... Violinist - Elinor Cummings Conductor: Anna Edwards May 13, 2025 Max Bruch (1838-1920) was a German composer and musician. He began to compose music as a child and studied music with Ferdinand Hiller, a prominent pianist and composer. Bruch studied art and philosophy, then went on to fill several posts throughout Germany as a composer, teacher, and conductor. Some of his most well-known compositions include Scottish Fantasy, Kol Nidrei for cello and orchestra, choral works such as Schön Ellen and Odysseus, and his violin concerto in G minor. Bruch, who admired the works of Sir Walter Scott and made arrangements of Robert Burns’ poems, wrote the Scottish Fantasy in 1879-1880. He was inspired by The Scots Musical Museum, a newly released collection of traditional Scottish songs. He included some of these songs as main melodies for the piece: Auld Robin Morris, Hey, The Dusty Miller, I’m a’ Doun for Lack o’ Johnnie, and Scots Wha Hae. Scottish Fantasy was premiered in Liverpool in 1881, conducted by Bruch. The third movement of Scottish Fantasy soars like an osprey over the Highland landscape at dusk. While the solo violin part tumbles and floats, strings and wind instruments pass the melody back and forth. Listen for the solo part’s duets with the flute and oboe, as well as the harp’s lush arpeggiated accompaniment. Notes by Elinor Cummings, violin
