We took our time and backpacked 40 miles completing Virginia's Triple Crown Loop including McAfee Knob, Tinker Cliffs, and Dragon's Tooth over five days and four nights. This is definitely one of Virginia's best backpacking loops. We hiked counterclockwise starting at Dragon's Tooth Parking lot, bypassing Dragon's Tooth (saved for last) and hiking to McAfee Knob from there. This video includes the Boy Scout Trail and the Appalachian Trail between Dragon's Tooth and Catawba Shelter, as well as everything along the way including an old mill wheel along Catawba Creek, beautiful wildflowers, turtles, overlooks, neon vibrant greenery, butterflies, bees, John's Spring Shelter (no water), Catawba Shelter (some water), Campbell Shelter (some water) as well as the first of the triple crown -- McAfee Knob. (See more notes on water below) We are from Texas, so we flew to VA, and spent the first and last night at the Holiday Inn Express in Salem. And, we ended up staying another night because of Hurricane Ida storms, which came through in the middle of our hike. We did not get a rent car, choosing instead to use Homer and Therese Witcher as our shuttle drivers. They were delightful, helpful, and perfect for this type of adventure where we wanted to spend the bulk of our time on trail. See contact information below. Justin and I started making videos and set up our YouTube channel to show people that if "We Can Do This--You Can Do This." You are never too old to backpack. Life is stressful and hiking is our major stress reliever. We are both in our early 60s and still working more than full time. I am a District Judge and Justin runs several businesses. We want to encourage people of all ages to get out in nature, move daily outside and see if your outlook and your health improve. It works - we promise! If you cannot get out there yourself, we hope you enjoy experiencing a little bit what we are doing---coming along with us on our journeys. If you enjoy our videos, please let us know by (1) clicking the thumbs up button, (2) subscribing to our channel, and (3) please feel free to post any questions you may have in the comments - we love to talk about our adventures and help others plan theirs. There was rain the week before we came and during our hike. There was no water at John Spring's Shelter. At Campbells, there was water down the blue-blazed trail but you had to walk down along the creek bed a ways, and listen and look for where it was coming out. Several AT thru hikers came through and grabbed dirty runoff but I was able to locate clear water by a slow careful search along the creek to the left of the blue-blazed trail. Campbells has water, best on the far side of the farm road using the black rubber hoses running downstream to slowly gather. Instagram: hewles and J&S Geezer Adventures
