Dr Joseph Coughlin: The future of the workplace and marketplace

In his talk (full title: If demography, is destiny, what do business leaders need to know about the future of the workplace and marketplace?), Dr Joseph Coughlin - Director of MIT's AgeLab - shared insights from how behaviours have been changing in the years leading up to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the ongoing impact for wider societal engagement. From millennials abandoning city centres to move into the suburbs to the increasing capability of older generations to better-utilise technology and the improvements to lifestyle and wellbeing that they provide, Dr Coughlin challenged a number of demographic assumptions by using the latest data to give more informed analysis and predictions for our future workplaces and other places of social engagement. He also encouraged businesses to think very hard about how to change their employment offer to reflect wider work-from-anywhere initiatives and expectations as infrastructure to support this improves.
