Material Type: Cast Iron, please note that other material types may be present that could not be identified during the inspection. A "cast iron piping sewer" refers to a sewer system made from cast iron pipes, which were once commonly used in older homes for drainage, but are now largely replaced by newer materials like PVC or ABS due to their tendency to corrode and clog over time, despite their initial durability; you'll typically find cast iron sewer pipes in houses built before the 1970s. No accessible cleanout was located; therefore, a roof vent pipe was used to access the sewer line. The main sewer lateral is cast iron and shows moderate corrosion and scaling. Due to the absence of a cleanout, along with multiple bends in the line and the deteriorated condition of the cast iron piping, the camera was advanced only as far as safely possible. Further advancement posed a risk of damaging the fiber optic camera cable. It is recommended that a two-way cleanout be installed in the front yard to allow for proper access, future inspection, and routine maintenance. At the time of installation, hydro jetting of the sewer lateral is recommended to remove buildup and debris. If warranted based on the condition of the pipe after cleaning, installation of an epoxy liner should also be considered. CORROSION AND SCALING ~ Sewer lateral corrosion and scaling can occur when pipes are exposed to minerals, rust, and debris from wastewater: Scale A buildup of minerals and rust in the inner walls of pipes. Scale can be made up of calcium carbonate and magnesium from hard water, as well as grease and hair products. While some scale can protect pipes from corrosion, too much scaling can clog pipes and reduce water flow. Corrosion The oxidation of metal in a pipe wall. Corrosion can release metal into the water or react with water components to create scale. Corrosion can also lead to pipe disintegration and rupture. Here are some ways to prevent and treat sewer lateral corrosion and scaling: Descaling A procedure that removes scale buildup from pipes. Descaling can improve water flow, reduce corrosion, and prevent backups. Chemical descaling uses acid solutions to dissolve scale buildup. Water quality Maintain water pH between 6.5-8 and water pressure between 40-80 PSI. Acidic water corrodes pipes faster, and high pressure accelerates corrosion. Laboratory water testing A water test can help determine if your pipes are at risk of corrosion or scale.
