Reading from the Book of Sirach (47,2-13): As the fat is the choicest part of the sacrifice, so David was the best of Israel. He played with lions as with kids, and with bears as with lambs; while still a youth, he killed a giant, removing the reproach of the people, when his hand swung the sling and brought down the pride of Goliath. He called upon the Lord Most High, who strengthened his right hand to slay the mighty warrior and restore the honor of his people. Therefore the maidens sang to him, praising him for his tens of thousands. When crowned, he fought and defeated his surrounding enemies, he crushed the hostile Philistines, breaking their power to this day. In all his deeds he gave thanks, praising the glory of the Lord Most High; with all his heart he loved his Creator, singing psalms every day; he provided instruments for the service of the altar and composed accompanying music; he celebrated festivals with splendor and arranged the cycle of the solemnities; when he praised the holy name, from early morning the ritual resounded. The Lord forgave his sin and exalted his power forever; he granted him royal authority and gave him a throne in Jerusalem. The Word of God Psalm Ps 17,31.47.50.51 R/. Blessed be my God and Savior Perfect is the way of God, the promise of the Lord is refined; he is a shield for all who take refuge in him. R/. The Lord lives, and blessed be my Rock, exalted be my God and Savior. Therefore I will give you thanks among the nations, O Lord, and sing praises to your name. R/. You gave great victory to your king, you showed mercy to your Anointed, to David and his descendants forever. R/. Second Reading Gospel A reading from the holy Gospel according to Saint Mark (6,14-29): At that time, when the fame of Jesus had spread, King Herod heard about him. Some were saying: “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead, and that is why mighty powers are at work in him.” Others said: “He is Elijah.” Others said: “He is a prophet like one of the prophets of old.” When Herod heard of it, he said: “John, whom I beheaded, has been raised.” For Herod had sent and seized John, and bound him in prison. The reason was that Herod had married Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, and John said to him that it was not lawful for him to have his brother’s wife. Herodias harbored a grudge against him and wanted to kill him, but she was not able to do so, because Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and kept him safe. When he heard him speak, he was greatly perplexed, yet he liked to listen to him. An opportunity came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his courtiers, his military officers, and the leading men of Galilee. The daughter of Herodias came in and danced, and she pleased Herod and his guests. The king said to the girl: “Ask of me whatever you wish, and I will grant it.” And he swore to her: “Whatever you ask of me, I will give you, even half of my kingdom.” She went out and said to her mother: “What shall I ask for?” She replied: “The head of John the Baptist.” She came in at once with haste to the king and asked, saying: “I want you to give me at once on a platter the head of John the Baptist.” The king was deeply distressed, but because of his oaths and the guests he did not want to refuse her. Immediately the king sent an executioner with orders to bring John’s head. He went and beheaded him in the prison, brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl; and the girl gave it to her mother. When his disciples heard about it, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb. The Word of the Lord
