Lesson 5 — What Americans Say When They Don’t Understand Hi, I’m Jill, and welcome to American English. In the last lesson, we talked about what Americans say when they are in a hurry. Now, let’s talk about what Americans say when they don’t understand. When Americans don’t understand, they usually ask in a polite, simple way. Listen first. Sorry? Can you say that again? Repeat after me. Sorry? Can you say that again? Very common. More natural ways Americans say this. Repeat after me. What did you say? I didn’t catch that. Can you repeat that? These sound normal. These sound American. Now add a polite word. Repeat after me. Sorry, what did you say? Sorry, I didn’t catch that. Sorry, can you repeat that? At work. Sorry, can you repeat that? Yeah, sure. At the store. Sorry, what did you say? Oh, I just said… Seeing someone you know. I didn’t catch that. Oh, I just said… Repeat after me. What did you say? I didn’t catch that. Can you repeat that? Repeat after me. What did you say? I didn’t catch that. Can you repeat that? In American English, it is normal to ask again. You do not need to pretend you understand. If you don’t understand, ask politely. That is normal. I’ll see you next lesson.
