Cristina Guerra Contemporary Art presents João Paulo Feliciano’s solo exhibition, on view from January 29th. This exhibition showcases over twenty works produced over the last five years, reflecting the creative intensity following Feliciano’s return to Caldas da Rainha. The works demonstrate the diversity and breadth of the artist’s practice, ranging from painting and figurative work to sculpture, collage, and mixed media. Feliciano often begins with pre-existing elements — found objects, industrial materials, images, or references to other artists — and transforms them using unconventional combinations of materials and techniques, including gouache, bleach, charcoal, watercolour, acrylic, decal, aluminium, glass, cardboard, wood, PVC, plastic, canvas, iron, and magnets. His approach spans drawing, painting, collage, photography, abstraction, and representation, aiming to transform chaos into order, insignificance into relevance, and ugliness into beauty. In this video, João Francisco Reis and Nuno Faria, director of the Arpad Szenes – Vieira da Silva Foundation, discuss Feliciano’s earlier works and the evolution of his practice leading to this new exhibition, providing insights into the artist’s creative process and conceptual framework.
