Fly with us in our Piper Arrow into super cool New Cuyama Airport (L88) onto Runway 29. We’ll talk about the fascinating history here, where to stay when you visit and why this is the best $100 burger. As always, we’ll show you around the airport, take you to lunch at the famous Buckhorn AND we’ll finish off with a tail cam view of the Cuyama Valley. Join us on Patreon for behind the scenes content: / outsidethecockpit TRANSIENT PARKING There is plenty of transient parking here. There are no tie downs in the main parking area. Cables for use with your own tie-downs is available in the overflow parking lot. Use the chocks provided instead or bring your own. Cost for overnight parking is: $10/single engine and $20/twin engine FUEL There is no fuel here so please plan accordingly. The closest airport with fuel is Taft-Kern County Airport (L17) about 18 miles NE. RESTROOMS Restrooms are located inside the Blue Sky Center west of the runway. CREW CAR / RENTAL CARS / RIDESHARE Transportation here is limited. You won’t find any crew cars or rental cars and rideshare isn’t readily available. There is a sign inside the airport sign in box (look for the giant New Cuyama sign and wooden plane) that has a phone number for a Ford F-150. FOOD The airport doesn’t have a restaurant on field BUT there is a restaurant within walking distance (about 5 mins). The famous Buckhorn which has been around since 1952 and has been recently been reimagined with an incredible menu and chill vibe. Choose from French toast or a tri tip caesar salad – you won’t be disappointed. The attached café has coffee and tea options for everyone. LODGING Cuyama Buckhorn has 20+ guestrooms with access to a pool, bar, coffee shop and their amazing restaurant. The Buckhorn regularly holds events and is well loved by locals. The huts at the Blue Sky Center are a great option if you want to be immersed in nature. The stargazing in the Cuyama Valley is a top reason people choose to stay at the Blue Sky Center. They city of New Cuyama is filled with ranches and farms. Many offer tours (chicken and pig farms) and sell their goods directly to visitors. Grab the Ford truck and make your way down Highway 166 for a fun filled unexpected afternoon.
