Today's road tour is the A96 taking us just over 100 miles from Inverness to Aberdeen, a key link in the northern Scotland road network and one of the highest trafficked roads in the region. The A96 is mostly single carriageway apart from a short stretch near Inverness, and most of the last 15 miles into Aberdeen including urban sections as we descend into the city. The road calls at Nairn, Forres, Elgin, Keith, Huntly, Inverurie and Kintore along the way. The A96 is one of the road included in the original numbering scheme in 1922, with the original start point a short hop westwards at Millburn Roundabout, which also served as the old terminus of the A9 until 1936. At the Aberdeen end, the road used to form George Street and continued onto Market Street, terminating at Trinity Quay. The route has generally remained the same over the years, with improvements and bypasses around Huntly and Inverurie only coming in later years, along with the dualling of that section of road.
