October 1968. Soundless footage taken at the time of the Battle of Okigwe during the civil war between Federal Nigeria and the secessionist state of Biafra. . Colonel Joseph Achuzia is seen directing operations on the frontline. . The bearded figure of Lieutenant Colonel Emeka Ojukwu, the Biafran Head of State, is seen conversing with staff officers headed by Major General Alexander Madiebo, the Commander of the Biafran Army. . Colonel Achuzia is seen reportng to Lieutenant Colonel Ojukwu. Source of footage: Associated Press. NB. . Ojukwu was technically still a Lieutenant Colonel of the Biafran Army despite his red & gold gorget patches. He was not formally promoted to the rank of "General of the Biafran Army" until 1969. Radio Biafra made the announcement of his promotion on Sunday, May 4, 1969. . Madiebo was promoted by Ojukwu from the rank of Brigadier to Major General in January 1968. . Colonel Joseph Achuzia had originally been a member of the Biafran militia, but was commissioned as an officer of the regular army by Madiebo on the recommendation of Brigadier Conrad Nwawo. It was a decision which Madiebo would later reflect on as “the greatest mistake of my military career.” Achuzia nonetheless remained a commander favoured by Ojukwu who had enduring misgivings about his British-trained staff officers. . It was around this time of the Battle for Okigwe that Achuzia received the moniker "Air Raid" in addition to the one he'd garnered in 1967 i.e. "Hannibal".
