It is known for its picturesque nature attractions and high quality local produce and dairy products. In summer, the weather in Hokkaido is relatively cooler than the rest of Japan and tourists visit to enjoy the many spectacular flower fields and beautiful natural scenery. Besides delicious food (ramen, fresh seafood, sweets, everything), winter is perhaps what Hokkaido is most famous for. Every year in February, since 1950, “Yuki Masturi” or Snow Festival is held at Sapporo, the capital city of Hokkaido. Hundreds of magnificent snow statues and ice cravings, many depicting famous monuments, anime characters and celebrities, created by local and international teams are displayed in 3 event sites around the city. The festival drew worldwide attention after Sapporo hosted the 1972 Winter Olympic Games; today, as many as 2 million people, from Japan and aboard, visit the city for the 7 day event every year.
