Seeing music through the eyes of math | Jürgen Richter-Gebert | TEDxKonstanz

Mathematics and music aren’t as different as one might think. In particular, the mathematical concepts of symmetry and evenness come up often in music. By visualizing these in commonly used musical scales and rhythms, we take a journey to explore the structure and patterns behind different styles of musical composition and even create new musical pieces. Jürgen Richter-Gebert is a Professor for Geometry and Visualisation at Technical University of Munich. He is an expert in web-based real-time interactive visualization, and the author of several state of the art software projects; among these are the Interactive Geometry Software ‘Cinderella', and the pattern drawing app ‘iOrnament', which has been showcased in context of several worldwide Apple events. Richter-Gebert lays a big emphasis on science communication and has co-designed and contributed to exhibitions at the German Museum in Munich and MoMath in New York, as well as several theme-based exhibitions such as the Music and Math Exhibition LaLaLab. The talk is based on his new App ‘Musica!’ He is also running his own math museum ix-quadrat at the campus of TU Munich. With an emphasis on using interactive visualizations to form accessible and intuitive explanations of theoretical concepts, his works and teaching practices have been recognized with the European Academic Software award, the Ars Legendi National Teaching award, as well as the User’s Choice of Educational Apps in the Tabby App awards.
